COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM
The Metrology Museum of the Portuguese Institute for Quality has a vast collection of around 3000 pieces, mainly weights and measures, from all over the country.
The various measuring instruments and standards of weights and measures have been collected over many years, particularly in the 19th century, when the Decimal Metric System was adopted and, later, in the 20th century, during the First Republic and the “Estado Novo”, with the objective of constituting the collection of the Museu de Pesos e Medidas (Museum of Weights and Measures) that came to exist in the 20th century, at Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon.
Almost a third of the pieces that are part of the collection of the Metrology Museum are electric instruments that came from INETI in January 2009 after the extinction of this Institute.
