THE PUBLIC SPACE OF THE MUSEUM

The space open to the public at the Metrology Museum is divided into two rooms that occupy a large part of the eastern wing of the ground floor of Building A of IPQ.

The first room, which can be used for temporary exhibitions, currently presents pieces of historical interest, from different eras and associated with several measures.

The most imponent piece visible in this space is the Balance of the House of Indiawhich emerges from the central span and rests on the lower floor.

The other pieces are presented according to different logics (associated with a specific measure) or an activity, or just due to the rarity or artistic beauty that characterizes it.

In the adjoining room, which is accessed from this first space, visitors access the Permanent Exhibition “Weights and Measures in Portugal”.

In this major Exhibition, the pieces and instruments are organized in a chronological logic, with the aim of taking the visitor to make a tour on the evolution of the history of metrology (that is, weights and measures) in Portugal, from the Middle Ages to the implementation and consolidation of the Metric Systema precursor of the International System of Units.

There are also some pieces distributed in several other spacesinside IPQ buildings, other than the “delimited” space of the Metrology Museum, which can be enjoyed by visitors, customers and everyone who visits IPQ.
